FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I have VA benefits and a Medicare plan?

Yes! You can have both VA benefits and a Medicare Advantage Plan or Supplement. These programs do NOT coordinate with the VA, but they do work side-by-side. In other words, you can use one or both benefits. It’s your choice.

What benefits can I get with a Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare Advantage plans typically have a low or $0 monthly premium, so they likely won’t cost you anything extra on a monthly basis. They also provide coverage for dental, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter items. Some plans even offer a reduction in your Medicare Part B premium!

What if I’m happy with the care I get from the VA?

That’s great! With some Medicare plans offering premiums as low as $0 a month, it is always beneficial to have the ability to go to a civilian hospital at an affordable price.

Do I have to switch doctors if I enroll in a Medicare plan?

No! You can continue to see your doctors at the VA if you like, but you will have access to providers outside of the VA as well. That could especially come in handy in case of an emergency, or if you have a ong wait at the VA for a procedure.

Can I change plans during the year?

Medicare allows for certain individuals to change plans during the year. These are Special Enrollment Periods or SEP. There are dozens of reasons why someone might qualify for an SEP.

I don't have Medicare yet. can you help me?

If you are to receive Medicare in the next 6 months it is time to speak with someone about what to expect in the next few months.

I have Medicare and Medicaid can you help?
